Analytical Services Group

Australian Radiation Services Pty. Ltd. offers an extensive range of analytical services and experienced staff to determine radioactivity levels and specific radionuclides in a variety of matrices. Available analytical services cover routine testing of natural and/or anthropogenic radionuclides in a range of sample types, such as soils, sediments, environmental and potable water, to waste and process materials, vegetation, food and airborne dust. In addition, the Analytical Services Group do their utmost to ensure that all analyses are undertaken in accordance with the client’s specific requirements and purposes; whether for regulatory compliance, routine monitoring, contamination checks, waste management, or environmental and health assessment.

The Group operates from well-equipped radiochemistry and counting laboratories. These have been specifically designed to handle and prepare a broad range of sample types, and conduct low level radioactivity measurements in order to accurately identify and quantify any radionuclides present in a sample.

A variety of sensitive measurement systems are available for radionuclide analysis down to trace levels, including:
  • a range of high resolution gamma ray detectors of various characteristics and capabilities for detection and identification of radionuclides;
  • sodium iodide scintillation detectors for gamma radiation measurements;
  • low level gross alpha / beta counting systems;
  • low level alpha spectroscopy analysis;
  • liquid scintillation counting; and
  • instrumentation for measuring total radioactivity (alpha, beta and gamma radiation).
Examples of the types of radioanalytical services provided.
  • Potable water: Analysis is undertaken in accordance with the radiological criteria under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, either in terms of gross alpha and beta screening levels, or for specific radionuclides, such as radium-226 and radium-228.
  • Waste disposal: Waste and discharge water analysis for compliance with radioactive waste discharge regulations or for public and environmental health assessment.
  • Radionuclide analysis of soils: High resolution gamma ray spectrometry is employed to identify and quantify naturally-occurring and anthropogenic radionuclides.
  • Naturally occurring radioactive materials: Analysis of minerals and industrial process or waste samples, and in particular analysis for the presence of contaminants due to naturally-occurring radioactive materials (NORM).
  • Air quality: Specific radionuclides or total alpha/beta activity for particulates on filters from personal or high volume air samplers.
  • Radionuclide analysis of foodstuffs: Analysis for export purposes or assessment of potential contaminants of anthropogenic origin.
  • Radon in air: Active and passive radon monitors and samplers can be provided for the analysis of radon in air, fuel gas streams or in soil gas, for regulatory compliance or assessment of ambient levels and occupational exposures.
  • Wipe test: Analysis of surface contamination wipes can be carried out for gross radioactivity (alpha/beta or gamma) or for more specific measurements using gamma ray spectrometry, gross alpha or beta counting or liquid scintillation counting.
  • Other environmental materials: If required for environmental impact assessment or regulatory compliance, radio-assay of vegetation and biological tissues can be carried out for specific radionuclides.
If required, resources are available for more complex radiochemical analysis of samples particularly for alpha emitting radionuclides. In addition, we can also arrange for non-radiological analyses for trace metals by ICPMS, inorganic anions and organic contaminants.

We aim to provide a totally dependable analytical service, generating test results that meet the client’s requirements in terms of accuracy, reliability, sensitivity, and timeliness of reporting.

Furthermore, we recognise the importance of maintaining an effective quality assurance programme that ensures a high quality service to our clients. Quality control is a primary consideration in undertaking our specialist analytical work.amd our procedures are consistent with the requirements of ISO 17025 and subject to the overall ARS Quality Management System.

In support of the extensive capabilities and experience provided by ARS here in Australia, we also offer exclusive access to the resources of an international partner for more specialised radiochemical testing.
