Calibrations and Repairs
Correctly working and calibrated radiation monitors are essential to the safety of those working with radiation sources. Our rigorous calibration service is the first choice for many industry leaders and government departments.
Australian Radiation Services' custom-built laboratory allows environmental monitors and other instruments to be accurately calibrated to a variety of radiation sources. Our calibration facilities are routinely checked by the Commonwealth radiation regulator to ensure all measurements meet the national legislative requirements outlined by the National Measurement Act of 1960, Section 10.
X-ray, neutron and radiotherapy calibrations are also provided. The typical turn around time for calibrations is 10 working days.
Australian Radiation Services is the first privately owned laboratory to achieve NATA accreditation for the radiation calibration of ionising radiation monitoring equipment.
NATA Accreditation Number 16987.
Organisations that deal with radiation sources on a daily basis need to ensure that they are using the appropriate monitor for the type of radiation they are measuring and that all monitors are calibrated. Not only is this common sense, but it is also the recommendation of all State and Territory regulatory bodies.
Annual calibration assists in accurate radiation monitoring that contributes to the safety and efficiency of your organisation. Monitor calibration is a serious matter but it doesn't have to be difficult.
Australian Radiation Services is recognised by the Commonwealth and all States and Territories as a reliable provider of calibration services. We can provide a range of calibration options based on your needs, or we can make recommendations to ensure ongoing safety and accurate radiation monitoring of your workplace.
Timely and Accurate Calibration Services
When it comes to the annual calibration of your radiation monitors we can offer you any of the following services:
- Pre-calibration operation check
- Calibration of your monitor to collimated beams of 137Cs gamma rays from sources whose outputs are traceable to the Australian Primary Standard of Exposure
- Provision of a calibration certificate and a report outlining the calibration results
- Determination of the monitor/ detector response to standard wide area reference sources
- Linearity testing of the meter electronics
- Adjustment of the monitor response to be direct reading
- Determination of the optimum high voltage of the monitor
While your monitors are being calibrated we are happy to arrange a replacement monitor for a nominal cost. Our calibration process usually takes about ten working days. Should you require a faster turnaround time, this can also be arranged.
Survey monitors properly calibrated are essential to the safety of your people. When measuring the response of your monitor to gamma radiation we use 137Cs sources whose outputs are traceable to the Australian Primary Standard of Exposure. The outputs of our standard 137Cs sources have been measured and verified by ARPANSA, the national radiation safety regulatory body. ARPANSA maintains the Australian Primary Standards for Absorbed Dose and Exposure, and issue Regulation 13 certificates for all sources used to calibrate dose rate monitors as required by the National Measurement Act for calibration sources.
Regular calibration of contamination monitors ensures peace of mind for your organisation. ARS use wide area reference sources known surface emission rates which are traceable to National Standards of Activity. Regulation 21 certificates have been issued by the National Measurement Institute in Sydney for all our wide area reference sources. Theoretical conversion factors for contamination monitors can be provided for 238Pu, 14C, 99Tc, 36Cl, 90Sr / 90Y and 129I. Other radionuclides can be arranged on request.
Neutron Calibrations
We offer calibration of neutron monitors to either 252Cf or 241Am/Be.
X-ray Calibrations
We can calibrate X-ray monitors to a variety of ISO standard X-ray beams ensuring that they are accurate and safe. For diagnostic dosemeters, calibrations are traceable to the Australian Primary Standard of Exposure. We also provide calibrations suitable for diagnostic dosemeters, kVp meters, and X-ray therapy dosemeters with low and medium energy X-ray beams.
Radiotherapy Calibrations
We calibrate radiotherapy dosemeters to 60Co gamma rays. Calibrations are traceable to the Australian Primary Standard of Exposure.
Radiation Monitor Repairs
We take the stress out of repairs on monitors with a fast turn around time and replacement monitors on hand while we fix yours. Our repair section is the only authorised Ludlum repair centre in Australasia.
